Zombie Sunday: Reanimated Zombies From Space

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

It seems that Universal Pictures is working on a project called The Something – which they described to be “Sci-Fi Zombieland” – “an ensemble comedy/horror hybrid set in deep space” – with the script that’s supposed to be similar to the one of Zombieland. The film is written by Rodney Rothman, who as the youngest head writer in the history of Late Night with David Letterman. (via SlashFilm)

Another cool thing I wanted to bring up at Zombie Room is Night of the Living Dead: ReanimatedT - a Creative Commons -released feature-length collaboratively animated version of Romero‘s Zombie genre classic. Twitch just reviewed the film:

“Fair warning to those out there who expect this to be a straight up animated version of Romero’s undead zeitgeist of a flick. For better or worse, it isn’t. Instead what we have here is a massive multimedia art project, a mobile gallery show, collected and presented on one platform for consumption, IE a TV or theater screen.”

And here’s the teaser:

Zombie Sunday: Waste Your Money On The Dead!

Got too much money?! Yes, I know the feeling – nowhere to spend, but shitload of it at hands. Well, why not spend it on some cool Zombie stuff. This sunday the Zombies go shopping online – let’s see, what we found!

Everybody needs a calendar on the wall. In most cases it’s some ugly-ass paperscrap with boring pictures of nature – or even worse, Anne Geddes “funny” baby photos… Zombie Room suggests you to get something to enjoy – a Zombie Calendar! Empty Room Studios has one for you:

I’m always shocked on how utterly horrible the mobile phones – especially the ones made for iPhone – look like. I know that some of you wield an iPhone on your side. For those, Zombie Bikini Babes is probably the worst thing to spend your hard-earned money on. But they got Marina Orlova, the hottest babe on the Net – so maybe it is worth a dollar or two. Who knows.

Buying a shotgun for the Zombie Apocalypse preparations is not always easy. Here’s an experience snatched from Not Always Right:

(A customer in their 50s walks into my pawn shop, which sells weapons.)

Customer: “Yeah, can you get me that shotgun behind the table?”

Me: “Sure, do you have your license and registration?”

Customer: “Yeah, right here.”

Me: “Thank you sir. There’s a 5 day waiting period for firearms. Come back soon.”

(He looks disappointed, but forks over the cash and walks out. Five days later…)

Customer: “Okay, dude, I’m back. Where’s the gun?”

Me: “Right here, sir…

(I make the transaction and hand him his shotgun.)

Me: “Have a nice day and come back soon!”

(About one minute after the customer leaves the store, I hear several loud shotgun blasts. I look through the window and the man is firing rounds into the air! He then runs into the store.)

Customer: “The zombie invasion has begun! It’s every man for himself!”

(I hide under the desk and press the silent alarm. Five minutes later, the police arrive, taser the guy, and bring him out of our back room in cuffs. I work at an ice cream store now.)

The guy should probably check out the Guns ‘n Gardens How To Survive Zombie Apocalypse -show, so he would know what to do when he gets back from the jail – don’t go shooting around aimlessly, you have only this many bullets and there’s always more of Zombies, that’s for sure:

Zombie Sunday …of the DEAD!

With those glasses, you would see dead people everywhere, too.

There’s only one real thing to do on Halloween, and that is to talk about the master of all Zombie horror – George A. Romero.

Romero is the guy who set in motion the whole Zombie film genre. Yes, there had been zombie films before his Night of the Living Dead (1968), but it was Night of the Living Dead, and the two films that followed – Dawn of the Dead (1978) and Day of the Dead (1985) – that basically set the rules for one of the coolest genres in film history.

If, for some reason, you’ve managed to have missed Night of the Living Dead, or want to see it again, you can watch it for free online – the film is in the public domain, thanks to the original distributor’s failure to include copyright marks on the film prints. As such, you can download and watch the film for free at the Internet Archive (thanks to Mashable for the tip!).

notld

After the “Trilogy of the Dead”, Romero hasn’t been producing anything noteworthy to the screens, unfortunately. He has continued his trilogy – films that end with the words “…Of the Dead”, but so far – both Land of the Dead (2005) and Diary of the Dead (2007) – were quite lazy, especially compared to “modern” zombie films out there nowadays, like 28 Days and Weeks Later.

Survival of the Dead (2009)
is the latest incarnation in the long line of “…of the Deads”, and the reviews have been surprisingly positive compared to two earlier films. The synopsis says: “On an island off the coast of North America, local residents simultaneously fight a zombie epidemic while hoping for a cure to return their un-dead relatives back to their human state.”

The new promo teaser does promise a lot of blood and gore, but I’m not convinced. But I’m gonna see it anyway, once it lands here in Finland (undoubtedly, on DVD).

Oh, and here’s a fun diagram for you I found on the Internet the other day:

Aight, happy Halloween to all, and stay tuned for Essi’s review on The Box, comin’ right up!

Zombie Sunday – Do You Want To Play Game

zombiesunday2

The winter is coming. Here in Finland it means crappy weather all the way up to December-January, when the snow comes up, and then it’s just effin’ cold. We mainly try to stay in and spend our time not thinking of the ever-existent darkness and cold outside. Not surprisingly, the suicide rate of Finland goes up during the winter (don’t know how they managed to tuck the word “WIN” in that word), and I have to admit that somewhere during Jan-Feb you stop thinking if the depressing era ever passes – and for the next 2 months, it just doesn’t. Where’s the damn climate change when we actually need it…

Luckily, we have games. This sunday, Zombie Room is happy to present you with two games of completey different scale: Plants vs. Zombies and Left 4 Dead 2.

Plants vs. Zombies is one highy addictive tower-defence -type game where you play a happy homeowner who’s lawn is being attacked by zombies. Instead of going for the blood and the gore, you defend your house by planting pea-shooter -plants that nail the slowly crawling zombie hordes. To get the plants growing faster, you need sunlight – thus, you pick the suns falling from the sky, and plant sunflowers (of course) that provide even more of sunlight. Yes, it’s addictive, small, nice game that’s just taking way too much of my time nowadays…

pvz

The game ain’t free, but you can get a free shareware versions of it here.

On the other end of the spectrum, there’s the film-like Left 4 Dead, a co-op zombie smashin’ PC/X360 -adventure that really looks great – and there’s a new episode coming up. The teaser was just “leaked” to the Internet few days ago, and I gotta say it really looks good!

More on that on their official website, I guess!

To this entry on the high note, here’s a nice zombie music video from a band called Chickenhawk.

Have a great week. And don’t forget the Dead Snow Zombie Walk comin’ up next week!

Zombie Sunday – On Health, Science and Love

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

zombiesunday2

The autumn is slowly slipping past us, leading the way for the winter. The days grow grayer, duller and rainier by every week. To prevent the autumn depression, Zombie Sunday discusses topics on health, science and love to help you make you feel better – well, compared to a decaying corpse, at least.

The best way to get rid of this murky and lazy feeling the lack of sun and chilly weather brings, is to exercise – and what better way to exercise than yoga? Here’s how to do it – the Zombie style:

Another way to stay sharp is to use your brains for something productive – and if possible, spend some hard-earned tax money to a research on zombies. Professor Robert Smith? (the question mark is part of his surname and not a typographical mistake) and colleagues wrote: “We model a zombie attack using biological assumptions based on popular zombie movies.

Here’s the full article – enjoy!

And last, but not least – the best way to keep you in good shape – both mentally, and physically – through the long winter is to find someone to love. And the Zombies are the most romantic mythical creatures out there – what could be more romantic than you and the one you love fighting together till the Dead do you two apart?

Now if this isn’t romantic, then what is?

Zombie Sunday – In Case of Zombies!

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

zombiesunday2

Good morning.

It’s Zombie Sunday again!

Now, imagine your home city would suddenly get a serious zombie infestation. It would start from a nearby mall, and spread fast everywhere. How would you defend yourself? What tools would you choose, where would you reside and how would you kill those fuckers?

incaseofzombies

First, you need to understand a little bit about Zombies – what are they, where they roam, how they operate and what are the best weapons against them. Let’s hear it from the very professionals themselves – Nick Frost and Simon Pegg, on Danger! 50,000 Zombies!

Part 1/3

Part 2/3

Part 3/3

The first thing you should do is to look at where you reside, and how can that place be defended against the Zombies. We set foot outside the door for the first time in ages to take a little tour around our building, and see what are the weak and the strong points of it.

apartment-1

We live in a 100-year old building made mainly out of stone, so there’s no fear for us the building collasing, even if there’s a fire inside – it’s been standing there through two World Wars, suffered a direct air bomb hit and still standing strong, so couple of Zombies are not going to tear it down.

portti-2

Another good thing is that the only entrance to the inner yard is blocked by a sturdy metal gate. The good thing about a metal gate is that you can snipe the zombies with a shotgun or a rifle between the bars. The bad thing is that it’s a human-operated gate – and whenever there are humans in the equation of fight against the Zombies, there’s danger. There’s always some wounded (say: zombie-bitten) friend or lover that can’t be left out, and once he/she is inside, there’s nothing a stone building or a gate can do no more.

korkeattalot

As you can see, the yard is completely surrounded with tall buildings, so no zombie (unless flying or catapulted, which is – to be realistic – quite rare) can get inside.

kuja

Even the wall on the other side is tall enough so that Zombies can’t climb over it. Well, unless there’s a pile of corpses they climb on top of, but one can always climb on the roof and pour some gasoline on the corpsepiles leaning against the wall on the outside and burn them to ashes.

ikkuna

The weak point is that we live on the ground floor. This is a problem if the Zombies get in to the yard – they can easily climb through the ground-floor windows, and then we’re fucked. And as we know from every Zombie film, barring the windows and doors won’t do it – they will come through the barricades eventually. The one good thing about ground floor is that it’s easy to use flamethrower to the Zombies swarming in the yard to clean it and make a run to the gate to lock it again.

So all in all, I think we’re quite safe here, despite some quite apparent flaws. How about you? How’s your house, is it Zombie-safe, or are you about to be the first ones to go?

(Thanks, Janos, for inspiration!)

And the last thing to know is how to kill them. The good thing about Zombies is that they are quite easy targets – the shit thing is that there’s usually way too many of them. But from time to time, you need to be creative in the ways you kill a Zombie.

MovieFill.Com was kind enough to come up with a pretty comprehensive list called 14 Most Badass Ways to Kill a Zombie – take a look at that.

Here’s a taster:

Ok, that’s about it for this Sunday! Have a nice week!

Zombie Sunday!

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

zombiesunday2

Good morning! It’s Zombie Sunday – so let’s take a quick look to the Internet for Zombies!

Zombie Playground
One of my favourite zombie pictures, spotted from 4Chan, is Jason Chan‘s “Zombie Playground”. Check out Jason’s blog for more nice art. You can also order the Zombie Playground as a print, too – from here.

Ok, how about Rob Zombie? I used to be a big fan of Rob’s first band, White Zombie, especially the album Astro-Creep: 2000 (Spotify link) kicks some serious ass. After he gone solo as Rob Zombie, I haven’t found his shit so thrilling, but I think Zombie Sunday is a great place to drop some brand new tracks I spotted via Blabbermouth:

In other news, Rob Zombie has just recently finished his remake of Halloween II , and is turning his milky white eyes next to the legendary The Blob.

And last, but not least, everybody has been going crazy about Zombieland – a horror comedy with Woody Harrelson – which is running strong 8.5 on IMDB and doing pretty well on box office, too. I’ve had my doubts on this film after seeing the trailer – can’t actually explain why – but it seems it’s really worth the watch. Go check Zombieland’s review on Bloody Disgusting, and here’s the trailer.
